As you celebrate the holidays with your family and friends, please pause for a moment and think about making a difference in the life of an individual with autism.
What is typically a natural part of a child’s development is an enormous accomplishment for the population we serve.
This year we witnessed:
An 18-year-old boy acquire the skills to brush his teeth and shower on his own.
An 8-year-old girl begin to communicate her wants and needs by using an iPad.
A 12-year-old boy learn to wait patiently on the supermarket checkout line.
Each skill they’ve mastered is a step toward a more independent life, at home and within their community. Thankfully, these children and young adults are supported through state funding until they turn 21.
They are no longer eligible for state-funded education, and adult programs and services are few and far between. Without daily support, these young men and women will lose critical life skills. Don’t let these individuals fall off the cliff.
