REED Foundation for Autism
According to the CDC, the rate of children identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is 1 in 36 children nationally and 1 in 34 in New Jersey.
At age 21, young adults age out of their state-funded education, leaving them with little to no guidance or resources at a pivotal time in their lives.
Over the next decade, approximately 1 million teens will enter adulthood and age out of school-based autism services.
Nearly half of 25-year-olds with autism have never held a paying job.
Supporting individuals with autism so they can thrive and achieve their full potential throughout their lives.
Autism should not limit a child’s opportunities to learn and grow. This was a common thought shared by a small group of parents who came together in 2003, desperate to find the right education for their children with autism. In their continued efforts to advocate for their children’s future, they knew it was just a matter of finding the right program. That driving need inspired them to start REED Academy, a private, non-profit school in Oakland, NJ, for individuals with autism ages three through 21.
In 2016, the REED Foundation for Autism was created to advance public awareness and raise critical funds to support the REED Autism Services family of programs.
As an active incubator for new ideas in autism programming, the Foundation supported the launch of REED Next Adult Services and the opening of Greens Do Good, the first hydroponic vertical farm in New Jersey, offering job training and meaningful employment opportunities for teens and adults with autism.
