A Holistic Approach in the Expansion of Meaningful, Affordable and Inclusive Housing
At the REED Foundation for Autism, we aim to raise the bar on a new generation of community development possibilities so that adults on the autism spectrum can recognize that a diagnosis does not stand in the way of friends, employment, supportive communities, or residences of their own.
We have partnered with Concordia, leaders in architecture, planning and community engagement, to conduct a feasibility study on the development of a local “Main Street” model and the co-creation of a conceptual design that will bring together the best ideas and resources in housing for adults with autism.
Concordia brings decades of experience designing adaptive, community-centered buildings and understands the importance of thoughtfully weaving programming with aesthetics to capture the spirit of a dynamic “Main Street” site and the people who will inhabit it. Feasibility Study and Conceptual Design expected Summer 2021.

Our first residence, in collaboration with Bergen County’s United Way, opened its doors in December 2019. Located on an idyllic tree-lined street in Glen Rock, New Jersey, a vibrant suburban town comprised of people of all ages, backgrounds and interests, the four-bedroom home accommodates four adults.
REED’s highly trained and experienced staff will provide 24/7 support focusing on daily living skills, individualized health and wellness needs, and ongoing integration into this diverse community with so much to offer. As with all REED programs, instruction is tailored to the needs and choices of the individuals and their families. “What’s special about our program is the continued learning that our clients will receive using the proven approach of applied behavior analysis (ABA),” explains Chantelle Walker, CEO.
Looking ahead, REED Next will build on the residential program with the rollout of additional supervised homes, as well as supported-living environments for individuals who are adept at the basics of more independent living. “REED Next understands that each adult is unique,” says Walker. “Applicants are carefully evaluated to match or create the ideal residential opportunity for each program participant.”
Both residential options allow individuals with autism to live life to their full potential. “These homes provide the support that adults with autism need to live as independently as possible,” says Walker. “And knowing that their loved ones are safe, happy, and thriving will also give their families incredible peace of mind.”
