Creating opportunities for people of all abilities to participate fully in everyday life is central to the mission of REED Autism Services. Beginning April 1, 2026, that vision will take shape through a partnership with the Borough of Franklin Lakes to operate the Franklin Lakes Community Center.
“We are thrilled to be part of a town that shares our vision,” said Chantelle Walker, CEO of REED Autism Services. “This partnership will allow us to build a welcoming space for residents while demonstrating what inclusive programming can look like in our county, our state, and beyond.”
The center will feature a revitalized gym with membership opportunities for individuals and families, as well as space for small group training for Franklin Lakes youth recreation participants and group fitness classes. Later this year, REED will introduce the Do Good Café, offering coffee, refreshments, and light snacks during regular business hours and on weekends when the nearby athletic fields are in use.
The Community Center will also serve as a site for work-based learning and employment. Roles connected to the fitness center, café, and daily facility operations will allow individuals with autism to gain hands-on experience while contributing to a vibrant community space.
“Employment remains one of the greatest challenges for adults with autism, with unemployment rates as high as 80 percent,” explained Walker. “By integrating jobs into the operations of the center, we are creating real work experiences that help people build skills, confidence, and greater independence.”
The center will remain home to the Franklin Lakes Recreation Department and will continue to serve as a gathering place for nonprofit meetings, social skills groups, and volunteer opportunities for local teens.
“We’re excited to welcome REED as our partner in operating the Community Center,” said Dina Robinson, Community Director, Franklin Lakes Recreation & Parks. “Together we will continue to make Franklin Lakes a place where community, wellness, and inclusion come together.”
More information about gym memberships, programming, and group fitness classes will be shared in the coming months as the partnership begins to take shape.
