When a child with autism grows up, they become an adult with autism.

While educational funding falls away at age 21, their need to practice the skills they’ve learned and take on new ones remains.

Approximately 50,000 individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) turn 18 each year in the United States—and at age 21, public resources for these individuals virtually disappear. They’re no longer eligible for state-funded education, and adult programs and services are few and far between. Without daily support, these young men and women can lose their acquired skills—from daily care habits like making their own lunch and getting dressed by themselves to crucial life skills like language.

That’s where REED Next comes in. Our latest endeavor is designed to support adults with autism ages 21 and older so that they can achieve greater independence and live a meaningful and fulfilling life. The year-round REED Next Day Program focuses on pre-vocational and vocational training, as well as volunteer and paid employment opportunities. Using the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), the program also emphasizes community integration, peer mentoring and assistance with daily life skills.  

As part of our ongoing strides to make the world a more inviting place for adults with autism, REED Next has launched Greens Do Good, the first social-enterprise hydroponic farm, in Hackensack, New Jersey. All Greens Do Good profits will support individuals with autism, and the project will also give adults with autism the opportunity to work alongside our farmers to plant, nurture and harvest high-quality produce.

The REED Next vision is simple: to change the lives of adults with autism so that they can achieve greater independence and become a vital part of their community. REED Next is there for life.

While our program is based on the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), participants are not required to have previously participated in an ABA program.

Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 3 PM.

Services are reimbursed through the NJ Division of Developmental Disabilities and Medicaid as well as private pay.

REED Next provides service to individuals with an autism diagnosis and who are 21 years of age or older.  There is no age cap. Acceptance is based on a number of factors, including an appropriate peer match, the clinical capacity of the program, our ability to make meaningful progress, staffing and program capacity.

At this time, REED Next is accepting individuals seeking a full-time program (Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 3 PM).

Yes, REED Next’s expertise is working with individuals with an autism diagnosis.

REED Next is approved through the NJ DDD to provide transportation.  REED Next provides transportation within a 3 mile service radius for day habilitation.  Transportation services for day habilitation beyond this 3-mile radius and for other services are based on REED Next’s ability to provide the service.  This decision is made on a case-by-case basis.

REED Next’s day habilitation “hub” is based on the campus of Ramapo College. In Spring of 2019, we will be adding a second location.

Staffing ratios are based upon an individual’s needs.  It is important to note that the REED Next program is not designed around one-to-one staffing.

Services are designed around the unique needs of the individuals we serve and may involve a participant receiving multiple services, such as day habilitation, supported-employment and pre-vocational training.  Opportunities to practice safety and daily living skills as well as leisure activities are integrated into the day habilitation program.

REED Next suggests submitting your application six months prior to the anticipated date of service and after a tier level has been assigned by NJ DDD.

All participants of REED Next are expected to bring their own food and beverages.

At this point in time, REED Next anticipates serving eight individuals by September of 2019. At that time, REED Next will assess their ability to provide additional services.
